IMPORTANT NOTES FOR GUITAR SET UP
Steel
string acoustic guitars.
It is important to note that a guitar is made of wood. This sounds like a ridiculous comment, but in this world of modern high tech engineering we need to remind ourselves that wood is an organic material and one that never stops moving.
Of course the wood is treated and seasoned in order to minimize unwanted movement.
If however we are overzealous in our attempt to stop the wood moving, we end up with a plank of wood with no sound.
As a consequence of all this it must be remembered that a guitar is not set up for life and will need setting up time and time again through its life. Frankly the better the guitar the more it will need the correct maintenance to retain the optimum playability.
Those who own and play solid electric guitars will have endured this to a lesser degree.
Our
Set up
We set up our guitars with an action of 3.00mm at the 12th fret 6th string, reducing to 2.75 mm at the first string.
We consider this to be the correct and proper setting for a new guitar. Humidity temperature and playing, over a period will cause this setting to change, particularly in the first year of the guitars life. Please note that taking your guitar to a technician for further adjustment will not invalidate your warranty, as at Moondog, good sense prevails in all things.
Changing the string tension will always require the guitar to be re-set up. If you decide to change the string tension, you cannot expect the guitar to perform correctly without.
Also the use of non
standard or non concert pitch tunings, will effectively vary the string tension.
We will not set up a new guitar with an action lower than this.
We will not set up a new guitar with action higher than this, with exception of our "Howlin" resonator guitar, which is set up 1mm higher to accommodate the use of bottleneck and slide.
We set up our guitars to
function with light gauge strings 12 to 52.
If you require changes
to this, we will only consider such changes once the guitar is at least 6 months
old and has had time to settle in.
Al the above applies in
the same way to our classical guitars.
The exceptions are that with a classical guitar we set the action at 4mm 12th fret 6th string reducing to 3.5 mm at the first string. Also they are set up for High tension strings.
